Preventing Crime against Children - NAMPOL
INVESTIGATION
If cases are not reported, then one of the main deterrents to future offences is absent. Reporting is often the first step towards ending these crimes. It may also help the child realise their 'innocence' and the 'guilt' of the other party In any circumstance where abuse is suspected, we would urge that all information is given as soon as possible.
These matters will be dealt with discreetly, and sensitively.
Be Safe - SAY NO!
- Say no to strangers.
- If you're not met after school, tell your teacher.
- If you are lost, tell a police officer.
- Don't let a stranger join in your games!
- Never accept presents from strangers.
- Never go with a stranger.
- If a stranger talks to you, tell your parents. Clever children NEVER let a stranger stop them on their way home from school.
- Clever children NEVER take sweets from a stranger.
Cever Children
- NEVER play far away from home without telling Mum or Dad first. NEVER go into a stranger's house.
- NEVER get into a stranger's car.
- NEVER walk on their own in lonely places.
- PARENTS help the teachers - if you normally meet your child and you are going to be delayed, or you are sending someone else ...please, always tell the teacher.
- Criminals are not born - they are made. Children who commit crime come from all sorts of homes. All kids have the potential to learn from us, good or bad, remember that.
- Here's some advice which may help to keep YOUR child on the straight and narrow:
Childs Play
- Do you know where your child plays? There are some places where they can get into trouble. Talk to them, advise them, help them understand.
Idle Hand
- Steer them away from street corners, gangs and places which breed mischief. Get them interested in some sport, hobby or pastime to keep them out of trouble.
Old Pals Act
- Do you know who they play with? The wrong type of pal can be a bad influence. Encourage them to bring friends home so you can find out.
Courting Disaster
- Talk to them about crime and its consequences. Childish pranks can lead to the courts. They won't know unless you tell them!
Branching Out
- Youngsters may be tempted to experiment with drugs, alcohol or solvents. Be on your toes and look for warning signs. Suspicious? Then ask the advice of the police. TOGETHER you may nip it in the bud.
Money Spinner
- Is he spending more money than you give him? Question him closely about what he has 'bought' or 'borrowed'.
- Perhaps everything is above board. Could be he'll end up in deep trouble if you turn a blind eye.
The Next Victim
- The next victim may be your child, educate him and avail yourself as a witness.
